- Mesotherapy:
Mesotherapy is a treatment that stimulates the mesoderm, the middle layer of the skin, which can, in turn relieve a wide variety of symptoms and ailments in horses. The technique in somewhat similar to acupuncture, but involves the injection of a combination of herbal anti-inflammatories as well as traditional medications in a dilute solution to stimulate the mesoderm. The mesotherapy injections involve extremely small needles that penetrate the intradermal layer of the skin only a very small depth, which is typically four to six millimeters. The number of treatments needed depends on many variables including the condition, the abnormal physiology causing the condition, as well as the chronicity of the problem. A minimum of one to two sessions of mesotherapy are performed generally to assess the horse's response. Mesotherapy can be effective for a multitude of conditions because it helps reverse the physiology of that condition, and stop the “pain-spasm cycle”. This technique has proven to be especially helpful in the treatment of patients with conditions such as back pain and degenerative arthritis of the back and cervical vertebrae (neck).

- Shockwave Therapy (ESWT):
Shockwave therapy actually does not produce any electric shock, but is rather a very strong energy pulse. These energy pulses can be directed at soft tissue structures, bones, or joints to help reduce inflammation, increase blood supply, and speed healing. Although shock wave therapy does not necessarily work for all injuries and conditions, in many cases it can help to speed the rate and quality of tendon or ligament healing in both fresh and older injuries. It has also been proven to be beneficial in speeding wound healing and decreasing bacterial contamination of wounds. More recently, the shock wave energy pulses have been used to treat inflammation in arthritic or painful joints and also to help speed healing at fracture sites such as splint bone fractures. Shockwave, in some cases, can provide a non-invasive alternative to traditional joint injections or another treatment for patients who have become non-responsive to joint injections. We have been very pleased with the results of shockwave treatments on a variety of conditions within our practice. ESWT also has many implications for use in canine patients. It can help relieve pain associated with arthritis or degenerative changes in the lower back. It can also be useful for some tendon and ligament injuries. ESWT is a non-invasive treatment that in some cases can help patients avoid surgery, and can reduce the need for injections or daily medications. If you have any questions about how shockwave therapy might benefit your animal, please feel free to contact us at any time.
